Operations using fighters are complex, sophisticated and technological challenging. The development of modern fighters is a continuing struggle in order to increase the aircraft`s technical, operative and electronic performances. The fighters of the future have no choice but to be absolutely superior in comparison to potential enemies and competitors. Fighters purchased today, are meant to be functional 30-40 years from now.
Today, there exist seven different competitive fighters on the Western market; JAS 39 Gripen, Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale, F-15E Strike Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F/A- 18E/F Super Hornet and F-35 Lightning II.
Out of the seven competitors, only the F-35 has carried through its first flight within the last ten years. Four of these aircrafts experienced their first flight during the Cold War. However, all of the aircrafts are good constructions, making them highly qualified for air combat, all though most of them produced using elder technology.
